Terry Bellamy responds to M.O.M
.
Why are you running for Asheville City Council?
Simply put, as I have stated in the past, I believe I represent the
views of our citizens and will assist in leading this community in a
positive direction. As a West Asheville homeowner and property owner,
I understand the importance of a safe neighborhood, pothole-free streets
and civilized traffic. As a native of Asheville who went away to go
to college and returned home, I understand the need for jobs for those
who have graduated from college and are looking to come back home. I
understand the importance of having jobs for people of different economic
levels. As a woman, I recognize the need to be included in the decision
making process and the importance of having our voices heard. As an
African American, I grasp the challenges of participating in all that
Asheville has to offer. As a graduate of Asheville High School, I know
that all our children can achieve academic success with the help of
our teachers, administrators and volunteers. As an employee of a non-profit
organization, I understand the need for businesses and communities to
come together on common ground to find solutions. As an active volunteer,
I comprehend the diverse needs of our elderly and others that need our
help in the community. My vision of Asheville keeps the citizens at
the heart of the decision making - not just dollars. forex
What prepares you to be an effective Council member?
Prior to serving on the Asheville City Council, I volunteered on various
boards and committees in community including but not limited to United
Way Allocation's Panel, United Way Marketing Committee, YWCA Board of
Directors, YMI Board of Directors, Mayor Russ Martin's Drug Task Force,
and many other activities that helped me get a diverse perspective of
our community needs. Since I have served on City Council for the past
three and half years, I have continued to volunteer in our community
in order to listen to needs of our community and make effective decisions.
I assisted in helping to organize the Asheville Buncombe Education Coalition,
helped to stabilize the funding to keep the YMI Cultural Center operating,
attended neighborhood meetings, assisted in neighborhood clean-ups,
written letters of support for organizations seeking funding, met with
neighbors in addition to effectively serving on nearly twenty boards.
I have done this while also serving on City Council and serving as Vice-Mayor.
I am currently serving on the North Carolina State Treasurer's Financial
Advisory Council, in order to look at and implement changes to North
Carolina's financial
system; additionally, this is my third year serving on the North Carolina
League of Municipalities' Community and Economic Development Committee
and second year as the co-chair of the committee.
I have also given presentations to newly elected officials to assist
them in working effectively on city councils in their communities.
